  • Principal's Message

Welcome to Winterset Community High School. WHS takes pride in providing the BEST educational opportunities for ALL learners. Winterset is located 25 minutes southwest of West Des Moines. The school district continues to grow at a very comfortable rate. The High School currently has an enrollment of 530 students which is expected to increase during the next several years based on the population explosion experienced by surrounding communities. Winterset is known as the birthplace of John Wayne and the location for the movie The Bridges of Madison County. Our covered bridges are a worldwide tourist attraction and we have a Covered Bridge Festival every fall that is attended by thousands.

..... WHS has 43 teachers serving 530 students enrolled in our high school. Teacher to student ratio is 13 students to every teacher. Class sizes are no larger than 28 to help teachers provide the individual instruction we feel our students deserve.

..... Parents and community members have been very supportive of the school district. A new middle school has opened for grades 4-6. New band, vocal and family consumer science rooms were opened in 2011-12 with the latest in technology and sound systems. Three new classrooms have been renovated out of the old bandroom. And expanded cafeteria was opened in 2012-13 with a new concession stand and trophy case built with the help of many of our booster groups.

..... Parent-teacher conferences are held 4 times a year and are well attended. Our Booster Clubs are very active in supporting academics, fine arts, and athletics. We have built a new baseball complex and have completely renovated our softball complex.

..... WHS utilizes an intensive 4x4 block schedule. The schedule enables teachers to implement curriculum that is more relevant and teaching strategies that are more rigorous, two very important components necessary in preparing our students for an ever-changing competitive world.

..... WHS requires all students to enroll and successfully complete the following model core curriculum: 8 English credits, 6 math credits, 6 science credits, and 6 social studies credits. Students are also required to enroll in 4 years of physical education and 1 course in computer applications. Students are required to have 52 credits to be eligible for graduation.

...... WHS teachers are involved in ongoing professional development. Some of the areas that have enriched our teaching have been CRISS strategies (Creating Independent Learners through Student-Owned Strategies), collaborative teaching, student centered classrooms, and using technology in the classroom to improve instruction. We have initiated a one-to-one computer program 9-12 for the 2013-14 school year. All students will be issued a laptop for the classroom. We have been working hard to get ready for this and want the classroom instruction to direct the technology.

..... WHS offers in-house Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Literature and Biology. Dual-credit or concurrent credit classes are offered in the English, Math, Science, and Social Studies departments. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our course offerings to meet the ever-changing needs of our students.

...... Parent communication is very important. We have two primary systems of communication in place: Infinite Campus, our student-management system which includes the Parent Portal, and mid-term progress reports. Through Infinite Campus parents can access their child's grades and because the system is web-based, grades are up to date as the teacher enters each graded task. Parents and teachers are also encouraged to communicate by telephone and e-mail.
    .....

Winterset High School also offers the following:
