This week, the TK classroom explored the roles of authors and illustrators while also learning about the letter Q. Winterset’s very own author, Phyllis Kaldenberg, visited as a special guest speaker. She shared her journey of writing and publishing several books and arrived dressed as the “Queen of the Quilts” to celebrate the letter Q!
Mrs. Kaldenberg read The Quilt That Gave a Hug and taught students about quilt design and creation. They also learned about her heartfelt mission of donating quilts to the neonatal unit at the hospital.
A huge thank you to Mrs. Kaldenberg for sharing her time, knowledge, and generosity! The TK classroom is grateful for the gift of her three books. What a fun and inspiring day of learning!

📢 Exciting News from First Grade! 🚀
On Friday, our first graders had some special visitors from Shive-Hattery, an architecture and engineering firm in West Des Moines! Five incredible professionals—a civil engineer, an interior designer, a landscape architect, an environmental scientist, and another civil engineer—joined us to talk about problem-solving in the real world.
Students got a firsthand look at how projects begin, brainstormed solutions to challenges, and then saw how the experts tackled them using drone footage, 3D models, and real-world examples! It was an amazing way to wrap up our science unit on engineering and problem-solving skills.

Each morning, a 3rd-grade student is chosen to read the morning announcements and lead the entire building in the Pledge of Allegiance! 🇺🇸✨
They also get to share a joke of the day—and it never fails to make Mr. Hinrichs laugh! 😆👏
